Poetry — Taking a day for myself in the city

Photo by Jonathan Quesenberry on Unsplash

the sky yawned
and swallowed up the city
a mist
soft like dandelion fur
fell on my cheeks
fog caressed the buildings
with a gentle hand
and I got lost in the grey hues
a croissant and a cafe au lait
in the museum cafe
paired together like colors
in a Rothko painting
two light browns
warm
one flecked with milk
the other luscious in butter
two halves of one whole
like the parts of myself
I thought had drifted away
on an ocean of overwhelm
galleries beckoned like sirens on the sand
and I danced through them
a synonym of color and shapes
tagging at my heels
I believe viewing art
is a most human activity
for we gaze upon someone’s vision
one that is cemented upon canvas or
any medium
and wonder
at the intricacy of the human mind
and the generosity of the artist
who opened their door
and let us in
